Heat-resistant and titanium
How to use the tool
Select material, operation, tool and coolant type - these are common to all three modes.
Selection—checks the compatibility of parameters and issues a risk checklist.
Modes - enter Ø and number of teeth, select aggressiveness level → starting Vc, RPM, feed and thermal risk.
Diagnostics—click on a symptom, get the cause and a specific solution for your material.
Why ISO S is the most difficult group
Nickel (Inconel, Hastelloy), cobalt (Waspaloy), iron heat-resistant (Duplex, PH 17-4) and titanium alloys are combined in ISO S for a reason. Their common features are: low thermal conductivity, work hardening and high strength at temperature.
Three rules that are more important than any number:
- Do not stop cutting. Stopping the feed means instant hardening of the surface. The tool no longer cuts, but rubs - it wears out in seconds.
- Control heat.HPC (≥ 70 bar, internal cooling) reduces the temperature in the cutting zone by 200–400°C compared to flood.
- Sharp geometry. Blunt edge = build-up, hardening, deformation. Change plates before, not after, problems occur.
Important: Ceramics are strictly prohibited for titanium - a chemical reaction leads to fire.
Critical warnings
Titanium + dry processing = fire. Ti burns at temperatures above 550°C. Small chips ignite. HPC or Flood is required.
Inconel + ap < 0.05 mm = hardened layer. The surface has already been hardened by the previous pass - the cutting depth should be greater than the thickness of the hardened layer.
Notch wear is the main type of wear in ISO S. Use ramping (variable depth ±0.1–0.2 mm) or round plates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to process Inconel with MQL instead of HPC? Only acceptable for light operations and low Vc. When roughing - only HPC or flood under pressure.
Why can't TiN coating be used on Inconel tools? Nickel chemically adheres to TiN → build-up. AlTiN, AlCrN or uncoated submicron hard alloy are preferred.
