Coatings
How to use the picker
Select the ISO grade of the material being processed, the operation and processing conditions - the calculator instantly recommends the optimal coating and alternative. Click "Check Your" - specify the current coating and cutting speed, and the tool will evaluate the match as a percentage.
Why coating is not the only solution
The coating improves tool life but does not replace proper geometry, feed and coolant. If there is an error in any of these parameters, even the best coverage will not save you. Use the picker as a starting point, the final choice is according to the manufacturer's catalog.
Quick Guide to Coatings
TiN—universal, golden. Budget start for HSS and TV. alloy Max. temperature 500°C.
TiCN—hardness HV 3000, gray-violet. TiN is better for steels and cast iron. Reduces friction. Not recommended for high temperatures >400°C.
TiAlN is the standard for steels and stainless steel. Heat resistance up to 800°C. Works with or without coolant at moderate speeds. Purple-gray color.
AlTiN—maximum heat resistance up to 900°C. Dry processed, HRSA (Inconel, Ti), hardened steels. Dark gray finish.
AlCrN - tough, intermittent cutting. Resistance up to 1100°C. The best choice for vibration and rough machining of stainless steel and heat-resistant materials. Silver gray.
DLC (diamond-like) - ultra-low friction (μ ~ 0.1), HV 4000–5000. Best for Aluminum: Built-Up Eliminates (BUE), Polished Finish. Does not tolerate high temperatures > 300°C.
ZrN - golden, alternative to DLC for aluminum. Food production (neutral). Budget DLC.
CrN—soft, viscous, silvery. Stainless steel, copper, thread cutting in difficult to machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
When to choose AlCrN instead of AlTiN? For vibrations, interrupted cutting and rough machining of stainless steel and heat-resistant materials - AlCrN is tougher and more resistant to chipping. AlTiN is better at stable cutting and very high temperatures.
Can't DLC be used for dry machining of steel? Correct. DLC breaks down at > 300°C - only for Al, Cu, soft materials. For steels without coolant - AlTiN or AlCrN.
