How to use the calculator

Select operation, ISO material, enter tool diameter and RPM. Specify the number of nozzles, the distance and how accurately the jet hits the cutting zone. If there is a problem, click on the corresponding symptom. The calculator provides starting values ​​for air pressure (bar) and oil consumption (ml/hour) plus specific recommendations.

What is MQL and when is it used?

MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) - supplying an ultra-small amount of oil (10–200 ml/hour) in the form of an aerosol directly to the cutting zone. Unlike copious coolant, oil does not cool - it lubricates the contact area, reducing friction and sticking.

Key Settings

Air pressure (2–9 bar): creates an aerosol and transports the oil to the edge. Too little and the oil doesn’t reach; too much and it disperses the oil and creates fog.

Oil consumption (10–200 ml/hour): depends on the operation. Threading requires a maximum (50-100 ml/hour), turning - a minimum (15-25 ml/hour).

Aiming the nozzle is most important. The jet must hit the tool-workpiece contact area directly. Angle 10–30° to the edge. A distance of 20–40 mm is optimal - at > 60 mm the oil dissipates.

Diagnosis by symptoms

Smoke/gas:oil burns → reduce consumption, improve aiming, check oil type (need ester for MQL).

Sticking/build-up: there is not enough oil or the flow is missing → add 10–15%, make sure it gets in.

Rapid Wear: For HRSA MQL is often insufficient - consider HPC (High Pressure, Internal).

Chips clog: when L/D > 3, a peck cycle is required; at L/D > 5 - internal cooling.

Oil overflow: reduce consumption by 25–30%, select a drier aerosol mode.

Which oil to use for MQL? Specialized ester oil for MQL (ISO VG 5–46). Mineral oils do not form a stable aerosol and lubricate worse.

How many nozzles are needed? For milling - 2 on different sides. For drilling - 1, precisely directed (2 nozzles interfere with each other).
