How to use a cone scan calculator

Select the taper type from the list - 1:50, 1:30, 1:10 or Morse taper (No. 0–4). Enter the smaller diameter D1 and the cone length L - the larger diameter D2 will be calculated automatically. For a custom cone, select Custom and enter all three parameters manually.

X Field—Enter the distance from the start of the cone to get the exact diameter at that point. Convenient for checking intermediate sections or adjusting the stop on the machine.

Field Dt—enter the desired diameter, and the calculator will show at what distance from the beginning of the cone it is reached. This eliminates manual calculations when adjusting to fit.

What does 1:N taper mean?

A 1:N taper means that the diameter changes by 1 mm for every N mm of length. For example, a 1:50 cone over a length of 100 mm gives a diameter difference of exactly 2 mm. The cone half-angle - the angle between the axis and the generatrix - is calculated as arctg(1 / 2N) and directly determines the self-braking mode.

1:50 (DIN 1 / ISO 2339) - standard for pins and light taper connections. Self-braking with the correct tension. Morse taper is a tool taper for the shanks of drills, reamers, and cutters. Each number (0–4) has its own taper of about 1:20, the exact values are different for each standard size. 1:10 is a steep taper, used where quick dismantling without self-braking is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is D2 calculated automatically and not entered manually? For standard cones, D2 is uniquely determined through D1, L and the 1:N ratio - manual entry would lead to errors. For non-standard cones, D2 can be entered independently by selecting the “Custom” mode.

How to check a Morse taper on a machine without a special gauge? Measure the diameter at two points along the length of the shank with a known distance between them. The difference in diameters divided by the distance gives the taper - compare with the table value for your Morse number.

The calculator shows a warning for Dt - what does this mean? The entered diameter Dt is outside the range D1...D2, that is, such a diameter is unattainable on this cone. Check: Dt must be strictly between the smaller and larger diameter of the cone.
